ABOUT
This project is about designing an AR/VR tool that facilitates collaborative pre-production. It provides a shared 3D space where filmmakers and teams can design scenes, adjust lighting, and plan shots. This technology helps streamline the creative process, allowing for detailed planning and problem-solving before ever stepping onto a physical set.
STORYTIME!
Imagine a filmmaker..
standing in a studio, ready to bring a vision to life. But instead of crafting the story, Alex is bogged down by slow previews, endless renderings, and complex settings. The pre-production team is working on a storyboard, but bringing the vision to life seems difficult.
THE PROBLEM
Ideas and discussions meant to be a creative tool, have become a barrier, pulling focus away from storytelling. How can we make it easier?

CHOOSING THIS DOMAIN
Understanding today's viewing experience
We primarily watch movies- either in the theatres or OTT and Streaming platforms. There is also a vast audience who watch TV serials (Daily Soaps).
1. Production processes vary greatly.
2. Significant differences in timeframes.
3. Each process adapts accordingly.
4. Requirements change with timelines.
INSIGHTS FROM THE SHOOTING STAGE
Stages of film production and stakeholders

SECONDARY RESEARCH
What makes for a smooth production experience?
Preparation and organisation are essential.
Flexibility is the key.
Storyboard artists need clear direction.
Set designers rely on adaptability.
PRIMARY RESEARCH
We felt that..
Primary research reveals filmmakers’ genuine needs and insights. And help us have first hand experience of new technology.

Goal: To understand film production stages and their impact on storyboarding artists and set designers.
EXPLORING NEW TECH
Testing the capabilities of XR sets currently available in the market
Here's what we found:
Meta Quest 2 supports VR; limited MR.
Apple Vision Pro supports AR, VR, and MR.

Goal: To understand cognitive load while using the headsets, eye or head strains and testing products that have already been designed for Meta Quest 2.
THE PROBLEM STATEMENT
The Director, DOP, Gaffer, Editor and other important members in the production process come together in the Pre-Production Phase to discuss the underlining idea of the film and decide on the shot division and screenplay.
This conversation is often conflicting and confusing for the members. This often can lead to a waste of time, effort and money. They need a common ground to land on.
SCOPE FOR DESIGN INTERVENTIONS
Design intervention can be in all stages of film production. One platform is a solution for them all! We aim to come up with an idea that solves the following:
✓ Simulations for actors working with green screen.
✓ Saved virtual environments
✓ Assist in location scouting/ recues
✓ Curating detailed storyboarding, screenplay and shot division.
IDEATION
Design intervention can be in all stages of film production. One platform is a solution for them all! We aim to come up with an idea that solves the following:

USER FLOWS
We primarily focused on three flows:
Scene builder: Placing objects in AR in your studio space + using tool library to modify lighting properties
Switching viewports for a seamless collaborative experience

OUR OFFERINGS
Scene Builder
Magic at your fingertips! Drag and drop scene props, lights and viewports and you've got a crazy realistic studio to work with!

Viewport
We know how tough it can be to work on one file with multiple teammates!
No more "This looks weird like that" or "Wait, what are you looking at?" moments. Seamlessly switch viewports to enjoy the perfect collaborative experience.

THE PROBLEM
Filmmakers are visual storytellers, and yet, we hand them non-visual tools. What’s up with that? It’s no wonder creative teams are off painting masterpieces in type and sketches while technical teams are building a different puzzle entirely.
Reshoots are no fun- especially when they cost lakhs or even crores!

INSIGHTS FROM THE SHOOTING STAGE
Stages of film production and stakeholders

SO..
Filmmaking's vision was constantly held back by a chaotic pre-production process. Paper storyboards, disconnected set designs, and costly physical camera tests resulted in delays, team misalignment, and frustrating creative compromises. So, we built a better way.
